Bouquet Sampler

Sampler Aux Bouquets

Sampler Aux BouquetsI’m making good progress with my Bouquet Sampler, I just checked when I started it and was amazed to see it’s only about seven weeks ago, I really thought it would be a major project as its nearly 90cm long. Like most cross-stitch it’s pretty addictive…

The Bouquet Sampler, or Sampler Aux Bouquets to give it its proper name, was designed by Nathalie Cichon of Jardin Privee. It’s actually a set of three samplers which you can stitch as one. I’ve just about completed two and three now. Continue reading

Vacation Time Quilt

Pat Sloan Vacation TimeWell I have finally finished my first BOM quilt, or Block of the Month for non-quilters! I’m so pleased with myself!! The design is by Pat Sloan and over on her website she released a block each month, starting in January. We had no idea what the quilt would look like until the end. I used it as a learning experience, and I’ve certainly learnt a lot, my blocks at the end are a lot more accurate than those at the beginning. I just used fabrics that were in my stash, many I’d had for donkey’s years. The starting point was the William Morris stripe, that’s what gave me the blue and brown colourway, ironically I used it least in my blocks as the stripes were just the wrong width! It made a nice border round the edge though. Continue reading

Sewing knits; Butterick 6258

A couple of weeks ago I went on a great course at the Yorkshire School of Sewing to learn  to use my overlocker, it inspired me to conquer my fear of sewing knits and jerseys! A few days after I wandered into B&M Fabrics shop to buy some quilt wadding, and there, propped up together in a corner were two bolts of fabric, a lovely dark red knitted fabric and a co-ordinating green and red tartan. Well, I was putty in their fingers! By the time I left Leeds market I had two lengths of knitted fabric, a skirt length of the tartan and two lengths of jersey for tops…as well as the wadding I went in for!

Sewing knits

Sewing knitsI decided to sew the red knitted fabric first. I found a Butterick pattern (6258) which was just what I wanted, a cardigan style jacket, top, and skirt. I shortened the cardigan as the pattern is knee length which is not a length that does anything for me, I cut out the medium size which correlated to a size 12-14. I particularly liked the cardigan as it has a folded front band which gives a nice edge to the cardigan.

Have you ever wondered why you avoided something for years? I am now wondering why I haven’t sewn knitwear before, it went together beautifully, so easy to sew! I haven’t got a big range of overlocking threads so I used black for the loopy threads and red for the seam line, it seemed to work well, I managed to get the tension ok so I was happy with the stitch.

Sewing knitsI even used a twin needle for  the first time! It took me a while to find my spare thread holder though. Luckily I sussed out on a scrap first that the twin line of stitching is only on the top, not underneath, there’s just a single line there…it may be obvious when you think about it, but I hadn’t thought about it before!!

Sewing knitsIt does mean that you have to sew things like hems from the right side, whereas usually I would stitch from the wrong side to make sure everything was ok with the hem. On the sleeves I found that I had too big a hem so there was about 3/4″ above the twin stitch, I thought about risking the overlocker to reduce it, but I decided to just turn it under and add an extra line of stitching, it actually makes a nice finish as it means if I turn my cuffs up, I’ve got a neat finish inside.

I’m really pleased with my cardigan, it is so comfortable and cosy, I’ve worn it twice already! I persuaded my photographic assistant to do the honours in the garden, unfortunately I was photobombed by Jasmine, Evangeline and Ivy, three of our chickens, they’ve got free range of the garden now for the winter and as they are trained to corn, every time they see me they think “Oooh, corn!!” We managed to get the photos taken before the other six got in on the act 🙂

Mastering my Overlocker

OverlockerMy overlocker is probably about 25 years old, I bought it when I was making a lot of wedding and evening dresses to help finish seams neatly. I have to confess I never really mastered sewing with it as an alternative to my sewing machine.

I looked at it gathering dust in the corner of my sewing room and decided I really needed to give it another go, particularly as I fancy starting to sew jersey and knits. Whenever I tried the thread broke, or I couldn’t get the tension right. I took it to Jack in Leeds Market to get it serviced, ‘It runs like a dream, could have sold it three times!’…so it was obviously me! Continue reading

Bouquet Sampler

Sampler Aux BouquetI’ve managed to do a fair bit of cross-stitch this week, so I’m over half way on my Sampler Aux Bouquets from Jardin Privee. I started it nearly a month ago and I really did think it would take me a long time, as its about 90cm long and 18cm deep. It’s  a compilation of three samplers and when you buy the three patterns it includes the instructions to sew it as one. I’ve stitched sampler number three and I’m now half way across two. Smocking

I’ve been busy sewing over the last week but as it’s a gift for someone who occasionally reads my blog I can’t show you until it’s been gifted. So in true Blue Peter fashion…here’s one I made earlier…

SmockingLast weekend was Helen’s 18th birthday, as part of her present I made a photobook called the Alphabet of Helen. I wrote something about her personality or things that we’ve done under each letter and illustrated it with lots of photos from over the years. Looking at it made me realise just how many dresses I made for Helen. I made clothes for James too, but girls are so much easier to sew for!! Continue reading

Bouquet Sampler

Sampler Aux BouquetsI didn’t get chance last weekend to show you my progress with the Sampler Aux Bouquets, so hopefully you’ll see a big change. It was my daughter’s 18th birthday, so the weekend just flew by, a bit like the last 18 years, one minute they’re babes in arms, blink and they’re grown up…

Sampler Aux BouquetsThis sampler is growing a lot quicker than I thought it would, it’s actually  three samplers stitched as one, I’m now almost half way through the second one. The photo above pretty much shows Sampler 3. When it’s finished the design will measure about 18cm by 90cm!  I love the colours in it, it’s designed by Nathalie Cichon of Jardin Privee, I really think she needs to take some more  photos, as I probably wouldn’t have bought the pattern if I hadn’t seen it on Hilda’s Good Life blog!

There’s lots going on on this sampler to keep me interested, a squirrel, birds, butterflies and a gorgeous little rabbit. It’s the same as the rabbit on the Way to Happiness sampler I stitched over the summer, very cute! You could almost play I Spy with kids, or maybe Find Flopsy (as opposed to Where’s Wally!!)

Linking up with Kathy for Slow Stitching Sunday  and Super Mom No Cape for Vintage Embroidery Monday, why not have a look what everyone else is stitching…

September’s Block of the Month

September BOMWell, I’ve very pleased with myself, I’ve completed the September Block of the Month within the correct month!! I’m doing the Pat Sloan BOM called Vacation Time, each month she releases a new quilt block and by the end of it we will have a new quilt and will have hopefully mastered some new techniques!

This is the last of the main blocks, next month it’s all the joining up bits! Over on her facebook page there have been several comments on how it’s a nice easy block (especially after Augusts border!!) so I was quite chilled about starting it…maybe this is why the stitch ripper became my best friend! Three times I had to redo a seam!

Pat Sloans BOMOf course I could just be getting more fussy and critical of my patchwork, the problem was getting my points to match, I managed to make them ok, though some are still not perfect. It took a while to decide on my fabric choice, I wanted to include the leaf design as so far that is in every block, so it sort of pulls it all together, I hope! The main problem was the background, as the lighter plain fabrics have been used to the extent I didn’t have enough for this one. so it’s the ditsy flowers again. I’m happy with the result though.

I laid the blocks out according to the design, I may decide to swap two of the blocks round to even out the colours, otherwise there is too much ginger  in one corner!  I’m looking forward to October 1st when the final instalment is published!Pat Sloan's Vacation Time

Bouquet Sampler

Bouquet Sampler It’s now two weeks since I started the Sampler Aux Bouquets by Nathalie Cichon of Jardin Privee, it’s progressing really well, I’m amazed how much I have done so far. I’ve stitched nearly 20cm of the design, which is over a fifth of the sampler. At this rate I might even get it finished for Christmas…though I’m not promising to keep going at this rate of knots!

Sampler Aux BouquetsI’ve completed the alphabet which first attracted me to this sampler, I love the way it drifts down the sampler with a mix of colours. Two of the ‘bouquets’ are also stitched with a third on its way. I’ve got a few little creatures to stitch next, squirrel, rabbit, beetle and a bird.

The colours in this sampler are gorgeous, almost Jacobean, rich blues and pinks with greens and browns to soften it.

Sampler Aux Bouquets

This sampler is actually three patterns stitched as one, I’ve started on number three and Nathalie gives extra pattern sheets for the joining area, so I’ve got to be careful which bits to stitch and where to stop.

By next week I might  even be on number two!

I’m linking up with Kathy’s Quilts for Slow-Stitching Sunday and Super Mom No Cape for Vintage Embroidery Monday, why not have a look and see what hand-sewing everyone else is doing.

Pincushion Parade

PincushionsIda, over on My Sister Made Me Do It is holding her first Linky party, a pincushion parade, which I think is a great theme, it made me start looking at the ones I use and the ones I’ve made in the past…

Scottie DogMy favourite in use at the moment has to be my Scottie Dog, he was officially made for Otley Show as a childs soft toy, but as soon as he came back from the show he was a pincushion. He’s great as he’s too big to lose under patterns and fabric, I just keep my long daisy pins in Scottie and he’s fat enough for them not to come out of the other side to stab me!

PincushionsI keep my needles in my glass ladybird pincushion, I kept losing them and I decided that if I have a specific pincushion for them, it may be better. It worked! This one is made from a Kilner jar so I can keep spare packets of needles inside.

Earlier this year I embroidered a Bee pincushion, it’s a design by Nathalie Cichon of Jardin Privee. It was the first design of hers I’d stitched, I’ve just started my third cross-stitch from Jardin Privee! I love this one, it was another one entered at Otley Show! I think it’s really beautiful, so I don’t think it will actually get any pins stuck in it!

Bee Pincushion

PincushionsAnother cross-stitch one I made a few years ago has a wreath of red roses round a charm, it’s beaded too and has a wired ribbon and a rose by the hanger. I made one for my mum too and she still has it hung on her clock.

Another one I made was for a pincushion swap, I did crazy patchwork for this one, my first attempt!”

Ladybird

Ladybird

My all time favourite pincushion that is definitely for show only is one I made years ago. The design was in Inspirations, the Australian embroidery magazine. It’s a little round cottage with flowers embroidered round it. It is lined so a thimble can be kept inside, I embroidered my initial on the base. It’s only tiny, about 2″ tall maximum.
