Wedding Sampler

Wedding Sampler

Valentine SamplerTwo good friends were married on Friday, I thought long and hard about wedding presents as they are both about our age, settled in their home, and originally said they didn’t want any presents…well that wasn’t going to happen!

I decided to stitch a wedding sampler for them and having checked my cross-stitch patterns, I found one that fitted the bill perfectly. I have a lovely book called The New Cross-Stitch Sampler Book by Helen Philipps. There are about three variations on this design, I stitched one for a friends silver wedding last year. The design I chose this time is called the Valentine Sampler but with a few adaptations it was perfect. Continue reading

Fit for a Wedding

We’re invited to a wedding tomorrow, I finally managed to finish my outfit yesterday, just in time!

Vogue 1182I saw a photo on facebook of a very elegant dress made from a kwiksew pattern. I realised I had a very similar pattern, Vogue 1182. The pattern is for a close-fitting dress, sleeveless, just above the knee, with a shawl collar and pleats across the front which hide a multitude of sins!!

cotton sateen

The material is from Minerva Crafts, isn’t it gorgeous, as soon as I saw it I wanted it, I love the colours and the watercolour painting effect of the design. It’s a cotton sateen with a little bit of spandex so it’s just got enough stretch in it to make it comfortable to wear. It’s a lovely weight too. I ordered it on line, desperately hoping I wouldn’t be disappointed when it arrived, I wasn’t, I just love it.

The pattern isn’t the most straight forward one and sometimes the instructions don’t make sense until you get to that point, so you do just need to work your way through. Having said that I did change a couple of things.

I stitched the lining first as a toile to make sure the fit was ok, which it was.

Vogue

I went on the sewing pattern review site and I had to smile that someone made exactly the same mistake as I did, right at the beginning…when I cut fabric out I always have the right side uppermost so I can check pattern matches etc. I was very good and followed the pattern cutting layout, it was one of those where the fabric is folded so there is a single thickness area to one side. I’ve never noticed before the shading that indicates which way up fabric should be…the fabric should have been cut with the right-side inside, as the left and right fronts are completely different it meant that my front is the other way round to the pattern. Luckily I could still stitch it up, just the other way round!!

VogueQuite early on in the instructions the invisible zip is inserted. Now this is only the second invisible zip I have ever put in in my life, so they do stress me out a bit. I didn’t have a proper foot but I stitched one before with a standard foot. I’m so proud of that zip, it’s invisible!! I’ve decide to put invisible zips in the next few garments I make just to get practised at them so they don’t stress me out as much, I’ve even bought the special foot.

In the pattern one of the last areas to stitch is the side seams, after the lining is hand-stitched around the neckline. I decided to stitch the side seams first in order to check the fit was good enough whilst it was still easy to access to alter it. I did take the sides in a bit, so my method worked. It made no difference when stitching the lining in.

bias binding hemThe lining was a bit complicated at the front due to my fronts being the wrong way round in the main fabric. I did a bit of hack and slash and tucked it in neatly. The dress was a bit shorter than I envisaged, there is a limit to how much of my legs I want to show! I stitched it using 1″ bias binding, I like to sew my hems with bias as it gives a nice flat finish, in this case by using 1″ wide bias I could turn the actual fabric up about 1/2″ whilst still having a decent weight of hem.

My new assistant, “Florence” was a big help, she put on a bit of weight as soon as she arrived and I’m hoping to customise her shape with a bit of extra padding!

I’m really pleased with my clematis dress as I call it. It feels great to wear, I managed to get pink shoes and bag to match and a lovely big ivory hat for the wedding.

Monday’s Meander Round the Garden

CeanothusIt seems ages since I blogged about my sewing, it isn’t that I haven’t been making things, I’ve been really busy creating, I just can’t show you it yet, it’s either a present for someone I know reads this blog, or for a wedding, or not yet finished! All will be revealed next week!

The garden has had to take a back seat this year, I know I’m going to pay for it next year in weeds, but I can’t do everything! Fortunately it seems to be thriving on neglect! Scented rose

I love walking up the drive at this time of year, we’ve got a very steep drive, near the bottom is a rose which I think is called Celsia, or something like that. It’s an old-fashioned rose, not perfect to look at, but oh boy, the scent takes your breath away, especially on a warm evening, it fills the area with it’s heady perfume. Next to the house we have a huge ceanothus, at the moment it is covered in lilac flowers with their strong honey scent. The bees love it, the whole bush is buzzing! At the very top of the drive is a philadephus with it’s orange blossom perfume, gorgeous!

IrisThe irises are all out at the moment, the ones next to the birdbath are some I got from my mothers garden, they’re beautiful with their delicate silver edge. They always put on a wonderful show of flowers despite being on some of the worst soil of the garden.

Hostas

The pond is rapidly disappearing beneath the foliage. The hostas are HUGE this year. Round the pond we seem to do ok for slug damage, I think the toads keep them under control in the summer and I let the chickens go slugging round the garden in the winter.

Hubert the heron is disappearing under roses and irises at the moment. I didn’t managed to prune the rosa rugosa this year and I must admit it looks pretty good for having a year off.

Teasing GeorgiaGenerous Gardener

The roses are all just starting to come out, Teasing Georgia is climbing over the arch and the Generous Gardener is escaping from the arbour, it really needs tying back but as I want to paint the arbour, I’m leaving it at the moment.

The weather is finally looking like summer, we even had our first meal al fresco yesterday!

From disaster to success!

coat fabricI started this dress over twelve months ago for my niece’s wedding last June. It was one of those projects that just went wrong from the start and eventually was abandoned before I completely lost it!

My starting point was a gorgeous fabric in peacock colours, not sure what you would call it but its drapy and sheerish! I thought it would make a lovely summer ‘coat’ with a dress underneath. I found a pattern which I thought would fit the bill, Newlook 9220, it has a sheer coat with a summer dress underneath, perfect! Continue reading

Summer Skirt Burda 8765

Too tempting!During the Me-Made-May challenge, I realised that my wardrobe was somewhat lacking in everyday separates, quite a few going out outfits, not much for going round the market or mooching round Skipton. I decided I needed a straight skirt. I had some heavier cotton fabric in my stash that I bought on Leeds market when I went with the Leeds sewing bloggers, not sure if you would call it a cotton twill or gabardine…you get the drift!

Burda 8765The pattern I used is one I’ve made before in wool, Burda 8765. The picture on the pattern really doesn’t help sell the pattern, but if you just want a basic straight skirt, it’s ideal. It’s a simple straight skirt with darts front and back, waistband and a kick pleat at the back. You can see it in wool here. Last time I made it I cut it out to a size 12 waist and a size 14 hips. As my wool skirt is fairly roomy for a fitted skirt I foolishly decided to cut it all out to a size 12. Mmm, BIG mistake, bottom clearly bigger than I thought, or hoped!!!

Back view of Burda 8765Seam ripper time! I unpicked the side seams and stitched it with just a 1cm seam, thereby gaining 2cm overall, it was just enough to make it fit nicely. I used my overlocker to finish the seams neatly. The zip was hand-stitched in as I still find it easier to get a neat finish that way. I hemmed it my usual way stitching bias-binding to the fabric edge and then slip-stitching it down, it gives a nice flat hem.

Burda 8765It turned out a bit longer than I anticipated but once I got used to it I love it. I finished it just in time to wear it to travel down to London in for the Women’s Institute AGM a couple of weeks ago. It was so comfortable but still managed to look smart after several hours sat in the coach.

I managed to persuade Helen to take some photos of me wearing it today, I think the paisley top I made last month looks great with it, it looks like it’s going to be one of those essential wardrobe additions!!

Monday’s Meander Around the Garden

Amber and Amethyst Garden

Well I think summer may finally be about to make an appearance here in Yorkshire. May has been pretty cold at times, I still haven’t switched the central heating off or packed my winter clothes away. Fingers crossed the weather forecasts look promising!

The garden is looking pretty good at the moment if you turn a blind eye to all the weeds! The aquilegias are all starting to flower, I love aquilegias, there used to be a stall at the Harrogate Flower Show that specialised in them, I used to treat myself every year, but unfortunately he doesn’t come anymore. Some colours have self seeded a little too eagerly, so I’m going to have to move a few. I saw some beautiful cottage gardens at the weekend when we were walking the first half of the Bay2Bay East walk, Grassington to near Thirsk. One in particular was full of beautiful aquilegias, all different colours mixed in together, it looked amazing. Continue reading

Me-Made-May and Newlook 6588

memademay15logowidget_zpsgymla92bWell today is the last day of May and therefore the last day of the Me-Made-May challenge. It has certainly been quite a challenge to try and wear something I’ve made every day, I haven’t got that many clothes! It gave me the encouragement to wear my purple jacket to WI where it was greatly admired! I did use the get-out clause of ‘accessories’ a few times, there was one day when I found myself gardening in a prizewinning beaded necklace!! I’m also doing a long distance walk at the moment over two long weekends (Grassington to Robinhoods Bay, 100 miles to the seaside!) and I prefer to walk in the proper walking clothes, but in my rucksack I did have my handmade washbag, tissue holder, hand sanitiser holder and purse, so I decided that counted!

Too tempting!Having realised just how few clothes I have, I decided it was time to rectify this, so I started with a top. The fabric is a paisley design from B&M fabrics, I bought it a couple of months back when we had a sewing bloggers meet-up in Leeds. It was one fabric I really wasn’t sure about, it was either gorgeous or awful! It’s made up beautifully! I’m not sure what it’s made of but it drapes really nicely.

Newlook 6558I only had a metre of fabric so I was a bit limited with patterns, I decided to try a new one, Newlook 6558, the sleeveless view just fitted on my length of material. I changed a couple of things with the pattern as having read the instructions the neck and armholes were narrow hemmed, I felt I would get a neater edge with self binding. I cut 1″ strips on the bias and joined them to get the length required. I should have trimmed the edge slightly to allow for the seam allowance, but I decided I didn’t want the shoulders any narrower than what they already were. There’s a side zip which I hand-stitched in as I find it much easier than machine stitching, although I can actually get it on and off quite easily without undoing it! The fabric looked like it would fray, so I French seamed where I could and zig-zagged over the other edges.

I love it! It’s really comfortable, looks good with trousers or a straight skirt, I think next time I will make it an inch longer, but otherwise it’s great, I’ve worn it twice already!

Embroidered Scarf

Embroidered tulleI think this is the last entry to show you from Otley Show. The class was for ‘a scarf, any medium’, I don’t knit and I ran out of time to do a silk painted one. This was one of those projects that sort of develops as you go along, working out the practicalities on the way!

My starting point was a beautiful length of embroidered tulle, I bought it in 2006 when I was planning our wedding. I rummaged around in my silk remnant drawer, I had a length of soft gold silk dupion that matched perfectly but it wasn’t quite big enough unfortunately, so I settled for a warm ivory silk, I think it was called oyster (bought in 1990 for my first wedding dress!!!) Two soft toys

Vogue pattern Teddy BearIt was Otley Show last weekend, I decided to enter two soft toys. Now I knew from bitter experience that ‘soft toy’ actually means ‘soft toy suitable for a child under three,’ well they should say that, shouldn’t they!! A couple of years ago I entered a Vogue Pattern teddy bear. Anyone remember that pattern, I must have had it 25 years!! I made the teddy and his outfit of tweed dungarees with little leather buttons, a check shirt with collar, button placket and cuffs (well it was vogue!!) and a little bow tie, he’s very cute…he was disqualified as being unsuitable for a small child!! He sits on a chair in our guest bedroom now. Continue reading

Monday’s meander around the garden

GeraniumsI can’t believe it’s Monday already, where do these weeks go! I did manage to have a few hours gardening this weekend, weeding and tying mainly. The chickens were very happy as all the bitter cress and dandelion leaves were thrown into the chicken run, they love bitter cress!

The geraniums seem to be getting seriously big this year, some of them are just starting to flower. I’m going to have to review one area at the end of the season as I noticed a geranium has spread under the obelisk and seriously taken over, which would be ok if I didn’t like to plant sweet peas up it to mingle with the clematis!
