Sewing Room Declutter 2024

Last year I did the sewing room declutter challenge for the first time and it certainly helped me sort things out a bit…but things sneak into sewing rooms over the year so I’m back to do the challenge again!

It’s organised by Karen of ‘Lets get it done quilts’ and it runs over 21 days, starting on January 1st, which I’ve obviously missed, but it doesn’t matter, you can start when you want as all the video prompts are on youtube.

In case you think it can’t be that bad, after four days of the challenge here’s where I’m at! This is a panoramic view, I haven’t really got round walls!!

Karen breaks it down into manageable chunks, so hopefully by the end it will be more sorted.

Day 1 was just taking rubbish out, one bin bag later!

Day 2 was ‘squatters’, all those things that really shouldn’t be in the sewing room

Day 3 was subscriptions; I checked through all my magazines, wheedled out a few I’m not going to realistically use, these are mainly Classic Inspirations magasines, so I’ll probably try and sell them on ebay. I also unsubscribed from a few companies on my computer who keep sending e-mails.

Day 4 was books; always a hard one for me as I love books, but I did flick through a few I’d picked up in charity shops which I don’t think I’ll be using, I’ll probably take those to my stitch group to see if anyone wants them.

Today I’m tacking Day 5 which is patterns, hopefully the dress patterns won’t be too bad, though I know there’s half a dozen that don’t fit me any more since I’ve lost weight and gone down a couple of sizes. Quilt patterns though do need sorting, especially ones on my computer, I do need to get them organised.

This is where I store my dress patterns, in those three tubs on the top shelf and the basket underneath…

…wish me luck!

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

I know how lucky I am to have such a big room, when the kids were all at home I had a windowless walk-in cupboard, I didn’t care that it was so small, it was just so nice not to have to tidy everything away every meal time etc.

That declutter is so popular this year! I am thinking about doing it in June or July. Right now I just need to clean my space!

I have something similar planned, but it requires considerable furniture moving to make everything a bit more ergonomic, and thus the presence of the Husband!

I am currently doing the same as, to give you some idea, your space looks positively clear compared to mine. I’m having to move the sofa bed into my workroom for reasons I won’t bore you with and so might have to lose a 4×4 Ikea Kallax unit which usually hides a multitude of sins unless I can make it all fit. I’ve already sacrificed my beloved cutting table (an Ikea kitchen island) as it took up a lot of room and I’ve decided that I can always commandeer the dining room table if I have something large to cut out.
I’ve joined an online destash group but, quite honestly, it’s a complete pain as so much stuff gets put on it that as soon as you post something it gets smothered by everybody else’s stuff and then when I did sell something, by the time I’ve faffed about with answering messages and postage I wonder why I bothered. I’ve decided to take a lot of things to a local ‘hub’ where they sell donated craft items to the public and use the money to support their aim of training adults with learning difficulties and autism to manage jobs in retail and also catering as they have a very good cafĆ©.
    Good luck with your endeavours.

Ooh I don’t envy you having to loose such a big storage unit. I’ve started cutting out downstairs again, especially with dressmaking as it’s so much easier, my cutting table in my sewing room is against two walls. I’ve a big bag for the Cone Exchange in Harrogate which sounds similar to your hub, I might try and sell a few bits but as you say, it’s a lot of hassle! Good luck with your declutter too!

I’m doing a total revamp and declutter. Being hampered by stinking cold at the moment and the horror of dreading going in and seeing the mess. I will persevere.
