It’s three weeks since I last showed you my Tall Year Square etui box, I was in the middle of a happy dance having completed the box side for summer…
With this project I’m not using the threads recommended by the designer (Betsy Morgan) instead I’m choosing my own colours from my rather large stash of DMC threads, supplementing it with a couple of other brands. This means that before stitching a season’s side, I have to choose my threads, thinking of what the season means to me.
Autumn is obviously all about the changing leaves, so I’ve selected various shades of orange, yellow and rusty red. The design includes oak leaves and acorns, so I needed a couple of shades of brown too. There’s still plenty of green about so I included that too. The linen is a soft golden colour, a Permin one, I’ve used the shades Betsy recommended but I must admit that this is the only one I was having doubts about, as it looked so gold in it’s packet. Having unfolded it and cut off my square, it looks a lot softer and muted.
I always start at the bottom. I know now that the colours I use here will be repeated at the top so I have to consider this when selecting floss. I love the bottom colour, with green, gold and a muted purple, unfortunately it’s one I found at my mums and I have no idea of the make!
The band I’m working on at the moment has a leaf and two acorns. I initially started stitching in the DMC green variegated floss, which is lovely but a little bit too fresh. In the nick of time (ten stitches in!) I remembered that when I was at Delicate Stitches in London I picked up a couple of flosses where I knew the colour choice for DMC wasn’t great. I dug them out and found I had two more muted shades of green, so I’ve stitched the stem in the darker one first.
I’m hoping this side will grow fairly quickly as there’s less tiny cross-stitches (over 1 thread!) and more long stitch. At the moment it’s looking a bit bright but I think it will settle down as it is stitched.
