A couple of months ago I decided to make some bunting for Askwith Show, we do the refreshments and I thought it would be nice to decorate the village hall with. A village hall needs a long length of bunting, so I made 30m!!

I bought a selection of pretty, inexpensive poly-cottons on Leeds market and Otley market, together with a 30m length of 1″ cotton tape from Samuel Taylors.

For Christmas last year I gave Helen ‘May Martins Sewing Bible’ (Great British Sewing Bee judge) and I remembered that she included a quick method for making bunting. Basically she lays two fabric right sides together and draws a diamond shaped grid on one. This is a stitching guide, you stitch either side of the line, then cut along the line, cut the diamonds in half and turn all the triangles the right way out. She explains it so much better, but it is really simple!

My pennants are about 9″ x 9″ and I spaced them about 9″ apart. I made about 90 altogether, so it did take a little while! I used different fabric front and back, but they’re all pretty pinks, purples, blues, flowers mainly but of course some traditional gingham too. To attach them the tape is folded in half over the raw edge, I used a decorative stitch for this.

This weekend I decided to put the bunting round the garden, 30m is a lot of bunting! It goes over the arbour, across to the arch via the conservatory, a big leap up to the lilac tree, round to the summerhouse before tying off on the chicken run!

It’s looks really pretty and summery, ideal for a summer party!
