This week I’ve been busy sewing a variation on the ‘Jackie O’ jacket. I bought the Simply Sewing magazine this month and it was the free pattern, I’ve not used one of their patterns before so I decided to try it out. I adapted it slightly, I wanted it a couple of inches longer and full length sleeves as I’ve never really seen the point of a wool jacket with short sleeves!
I only had a metre of material so it was a bit tight cutting out. I used a length of wool I bought on Goldhawk Road last autumn, it was one of those impulse buys! It’s randomly patterned in purples and green, I love the colours! It feels felted, so I decided I would risk cutting the sleeves out across the fabric, rather than along it, otherwise I wouldn’t have had enough fabric!
I cut out a size 12 which was for a 37″ bust, this should have been plenty big enough, however having made it, it does feel a bit snug, so I might have been better with a 14, I certainly couldn’t put any fastening on the front.
It went together very easily, the sleeves in particular went in like a dream! The instructions were simple, although there were some bits of information that I couldn’t find anywhere, such as the seam allowance (I presumed it was 5/8″ as usual, I only checked because it was a bit on the small size) I decided to line it, I made an identical jacket in a purple lining fabric, stitched the facing as per instructions, but I couldn’t find anywhere the instructions for the back hem, so I cut a length to make a facing. I hand-stitched the lining in and top-stitched round the finished edge.
I’m pleased with it, it does feel a bit small, but I will get lots of wear out of it, just need something to go with it now…I think I need a purple sheath dress to go with it!

Ooh that fabric is lovely! Well done. I still haven’t lined my Jackie O jacket. I didn’t think of lengthening the sleeves, but it makes sense! 🙂

Doing some jacket research and found your version of this. Love the striking fabric you chose, do you mind me asking which size you chose? Interesting that it came up a bit smal, though looks lovely in your images 🙂

Hi, I’ve just checked the pattern and I cut out a 12, which it reckons is for a 37″ bust…and my boobs aren’t that big!

Thanks for checking back, I’ve decided to start with this one as it looks the simplest and has fewer pieces. I have a fairly cheap fabric to practice on too… Yours looks great, hopefully it’s had a fair bit of wear 🙂

Hi, so glad I came across your blog, your jacket looks great.
I have been putting off cutting out the Jackie O a Jacket for two reasons; I have no idea how you line a jacket and I wanted longer sleeves! I am a beginner and sometimes I am put off by the unknown.
When you lengthened the sleeves, how did you do that, did you just add how many cm’s you needed it to be to reach where you wanted the sleeve to finish plus the s/a??

Hi Elizabeth, to lengthen the sleeves I did just add the required extra length, probably plus a bit extra to be on the safe side 🙂 I bought a Threads magazine last week and there was an article about lining an unlined jacket, it might be useful.

that looks great I also have this pattern but not sure how to line it. I always prefer that
do you just add 1 cm to the facing seam and the remaining bodice seam of the lining? then sew together?

Hi Maria, it’s a while since I made this but I think I just made a lining using the front, back and sleeves pattern pieces, pinned it to the facing, snipping and trimming where necessary before hand-stitching it in.
