Christmas Icing!

Christmas CakeThis week end I finally decorated our Christmas cake, I made it a couple of months ago and I’ve been occasionally feeding it with sherry ever since. My sister feeds hers a lot, to the extent that one year she asked me to decorate a cake, I iced it and the whole thing slumped to one side, ‘Ruth,’ I said, ‘this cake is drunk!!’ One slice of Ruth’s cake is enough to send you over the limit!! Mine’s not that bad!

Here in the UK, Christmas cakes are traditionally a rich, dark fruit cake, covered with marzipan and icing sugar. I have a book by Joanna Farrow on decorating Christmas cakes so when the children were little they would spend ages choosing a cake, then I had to try and make it!Santas Sleigh Cake I think I’ve made most of the cakes in the book now! My favourite was a cake made in a pudding basin to make a rounded cake, the top was covered in midnight blue icing, an uneven strip of white around the bottom made hills, simple little buildings made a village, then a Father Christmas in his sleigh with all the reindeer was iced so it would stand on the top as if he was flying through the sky. It did look pretty good…although it did turn everyone’s tongue blue!! This year I’ve gone for a slightly simpler design! Continue reading

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Otley Christmas Tree FestivalThis year my WI decided to take part in the Christmas tree festival held in our parish church. It’s the first time we’ve done it, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect, I put the cat among the pigeons by saying that being Women’s Institute, the decorations had to be hand made, or at east look handmade! I asked them to dig out any suitable decorations.

In the meantime I checked out what I had, a few cross-stitch ones, a basket weave wreath, some decorated baskets…I decided to make a few more!

Cathedral Window DecorationsOn facebook I’d seen several pretty decorations, one in particular looked a bit like cathedral window patchwork. I found the instructions on U-Tube, they really are so simple you can literally make them in under 30 minutes. It’s just two circles of fabric stitched together and turned, I top-stitched round in gold. The  four opposite points are stitched together and after a bit of fiddling to straighten and neaten it, the  corners are flipped over and it’s finished! I stitched a glass button in the middle to finish it off.

Christmas Tree Button Decorations

One of the Christmas Craft magazines included a little wreath made by threading buttons onto wire. I bought one of those craft bags of mixed buttons in Christmas colours to have a go. I tried threading them straight onto the wire but I just couldn’t get it to look right, I then thought to try with a red bead between each button and it works, I was really pleased with them. I also tried threading them flat onto the iwre for a different style of button wreath.

Holly GarlandAnother quick make inspired by a magazine was my holly garland. I cut out holly leaves in felt. I’d recently bought a mixed pack from Minerva crafts in Christmas colours and it was perfect for the job as it’s a fairly crisp, thin felt. The magazine had red circles cut out for the berries, but I decided pompoms would be even better. I noticed on the Minerva website they had packs of mini threadable pompoms in red.

Cross-stitch houseI used a reel of old green crochet cotton, I didn’t cut the thread, just threaded the  needle on the end so I could calculate the length I need at the end!. I spent  a relaxing evening stitching the garland together, I just used running stitch down the centre of each holly leaf and then threaded on a pompom, before stitching the next leaf. Altogether I ended up with about 4m! It’s now blu-tacked round the conservatory!

Cross-stitch Christmas decorationsIf I say so myself our WI tree looked gorgeous, afterwards I hung the decorations on our tree. We always have a real tree, usually the old-fashioned type that drops it’s needles, apart from the cost of the non-drop, I prefer the old-fashioned ones for the scent, I love the smell of a proper Christmas tree. We’ve had a tradition over recent years of walking up to the nearby riding stables to buy a tree, the staff net it and then we carry it between us, it used to be me and two children, now it’s usually me and Helen. It’s quite amusing trying to cross the main road as we have to do like a crab walk across!

Our fairy took pride of place at the top of the tree, showing off her new dress!

Zig-Zag Scissor Keeper

Zig-zag scissor keeperSometimes at Christmas it’s nice to sew something that’s nothing to do with Christmas, it’s like  an escape from the hustle and bustle of Christmas, you can just immerse yourself in the land of stitching for a short while, a little breather with no deadlines!

I bought this kit at the Harrogate Knitting and Stitching Show in November, I made a conscious effort at the show to buy kits for things rather than pictures as I am running out of available wall space!! This kit is designed by Sue Hawkins, she has some gorgeous embroidery kits, I particularly liked the counted canvas work ones. I fell for a scissor keeper and as it happens I have a good pair of embroidery scissors on my Christmas wish list, so I’ve made a scissor keeper in advance!

Zig-zag scissor keeperThe quirky shape with the tiny bells on each corner appealed to me as well as the colours which are various pinks, greens and gold.

The scissor keeper is made from two squares of embroidered canvas which are stitched corner to side if that makes sense, it forms a zig-zag seam round the keeper. The instructions are actually really clear and easy to follow, I wasn’t sure at first when I read them, but they are the sort of instructions that make perfect sense once you get to that point!

Zig-zag scissor keeperThe two squares are embroidered with just three different threads, variegated pink, green and gold. The variegation gives a lovely soft effect to the design which uses mainly tent stitch, satin stitch, long stitch and French knots, so nothing complicated. The top is predominantly green and the bottom is mainly pink.

Zig-zag scissor keeperThe two squares were completed in no time, they are pretty small. next bit to make was the cord which was fiddly just because it was a relatively short length, I’ve made cord before but this time I didn’t feel I had enough length to start tying it to something and twisting it with a pencil, so I did it between my fingers…first I made a pink cord, then looped a length of green thread through it before making a green cord, the two lengths were then twisted together to make a green and pink cord. This was folded in half, knotted, and after a bit of persuasion, threaded through the centre of the top square.

Zig-zag scissor keeper

Stitching the two squares together was fiddly due to size, but a lot easier than I anticipated. I think the regular pattern and the even canvas made it easy to keep on track. The edges were stitched using long cross-stitch, this was a new stitch to me but gives a lovely firm edge with a herringbone style pattern.

The scissor keeper was finished with a tiny Dorset button. These are made from a metal ring, button-hole stitch is used to cover the ring, then a web of thread is made and back-stitched round and round to secure it.

The scissor keeper probably took a few evenings, no more than that, it was really nice to do, I’m tempted to get another kit next year!

Linking up with Kathy’s Quilts for Slow Stitching Sunday and Super Mom No Cape for Vintage Embroidery Monday, why not have a look what everyone else has been stitching on the run up to Christmas.

A Christmas Wreath

Fabric wreath,A few weeks ago a very talented lady called Serena posted a photo on Pat Sloans  facebook page of a beautiful wreath in autumn colours. Isn’t it stunning! Facebook went crazy for a few days as everyone wanted the pattern, unfortunately there was no pattern, she had just created it! Several days later and Serena had written the instructions and it is now available for free on Pat Sloans website. Continue reading

A New Dress for the Christmas Fairy

Christmas FairyWe have a fairy on the top of our Christmas tree, apparently according to tradition it should be a star as our first born was a boy, but I like fairies, so that’s what we’ve got!

Our fairy was beginning to look a bit sorry for herself, one wing had fallen off ( a feather!) and she was generally looking a bit tired. I decided last night to try and make her a new outfit for Christmas! Continue reading

Handmade Presents

BookmarkI’ve been busy hand-sewing some Christmas presents this week, two bookmarks to be precise. We’ve got a big family Christmas this year (Fourteen on the day!) with family coming over from Australia, Germany as well as other parts of England.

Understandably the family coming over from Australia have said no presents, which I completely understand, especially as there is six of us, three of them, that’s a lot of presents to carry there and back! As hostess though, I feel they should have a little something to open on the day, particularly as we open family presents after lunch, it would be a bit awkward with them watching us open everything! We have always done ‘Father Christmas’ presents first thing, then all the others are put under the tree and given out in the afternoon, it does help  spread the excitement when the children are little.

Embroidery FlossKate is about 11 or 12, so not a little girl anymore, but not quite a teenager. I seem to remember she loves books and reading, so  I decided to make her a bookmark. I found a pretty design on Etsy of a dovecote with flowers and butterflies which I thought would be perfect.

Considering the large collection of embroidery silks I have, I was quite surprised to see I only had two of the colours, I did debate whether to substitute, but I decided the nice fresh colours were what appealed with this design. When I bought the silks I could see why I didn’t have them, they are pretty bright, but somehow they work well together.

BookmarkI only made one mistake on this one, I back-stitched in black, whereas it should have been dark brown, I was too far along to unpick when I realised. I can see why I made the error, the only image on the website is the colour chart, there is no actual picture of a completed cross-stitch, which I must admit I think is a bit naughty, it did mean that in my head it was outlined in black! I added her name at the bottom to personalise it.

I wasn’t sure how to finish it at first, however I found a pretty pink floral cotton in my stash so I backed it with that, stitching it to form a binding to frame the cross-stitch. A folded length of pink ribbon completes it. I think it looks really pretty so I hope she likes it.

BookmarkI’m now almost finished on a second bookmark, this time it’s for my OH, he loves reading and never seems to have a bookmark. This pattern is again on Etsy and luckily I had most of the colours in, otherwise I think I might have been substituting for this one! I’m aiming to back it the same way, I’ve got some blue cotton which I think will match perfectly. I’ve just got a little back-stitching to finish and it’s complete.

I think I’m wining with the presents now, I’ve just got to stitch a button on the laptop sleeve as the sneaky test fit showed it fitted perfectly, one more present to finish which I can’t tell you about til after Christmas, fourteen crackers to make, Christmas cake to decorate, gingerbread house to decorate, 100 cards to write…I’d better get cracking!

The Christmas countdown begins

Well the countdown to Christmas has definitely begun, as I mentioned  on Sunday I love the build up to Christmas from  all the Advent traditions.

Advent CalendarToday the Advent calendars came out. I made this one nearly 20 years ago. It’s a pre-printed panel with the main square and then all the pockets to stitch on. I seem to remember it took quite a while to make, mainly from stitching on all the pockets and their flaps. I quilted it by hand around the main features such as the door and the children. I was quite sad today to see one for sale in a charity shop, thinking of all the love and work that probably went into it, but then I thought if the kids have all grown up at least some other child is going  to enjoy it now.

Advent CalendarWhen the children were little I never put chocolate in the pockets, I bought something that could be broken down into bits, sometimes it was playmobil sets, so one day they would get the figure, another day a wheelbarrow and so on. James quite often got a mini meccano set, so he would get the tools first and the instructions, then one piece each day, though it took some working out to ensure he got them in the right order!. The best one was when I bought kits from the Natural History museum which were like meccano but it made an insect, like a beetle!

Advent CandleI like to have an Advent candle too, we always used to get the slim ones and light it during tea time. This year I bought a bigger one from Lakeland. I’ve stuck it down with bluetack on the centre of the Advent ring as it was bigger than the holder! It looks pretty good there. I’m somewhat concerned though as according to the label each day has about 2 hours burning time, it’s already been lit for 4 hours and I’m no where near number one!

Christmas Present for Mum

Butterick 6258My mum doesn’t read my blog, I don’t think she really ‘gets’ blogs, so I’m safe sharing her Christmas present!

Last month I made a cardigan from some lovely cable knit fabric, it was one of my first forays into overlocking after my sewing course. It’s great to wear, really snuggly and warm. My mum was admiring it all morning when she first saw it, especially when she realized I’d made it. She asked if I could get her a length of the material so she could try and make one…now my mum used to do lots of dressmaking, she was very good, but I doubt she’s sewn anything apart from curtains for over 10 years. I promised I would look in the shop next time I was in Leeds. Continue reading

Laptop Sleeve

Laptop sleeveEarlier in the year I made Helen a laptop sleeve from remnants left from her black and white quilt, I’m pleased to say she really likes it, in fact her best friend wants one too! Her best friend happens to be my god-daughter too so I often make her something for Christmas, when she was little I made pretty little dresses, so they are used to getting handmade presents from me. Now she’s 18 years old it’s not so easy, but this year she has put in a polite request for a laptop sleeve.

Laptop SleeveI was told that her laptop fits in Helen’s sleeve, so please make it just like that one! Unfortunately the pattern I follow uses the laptop measurements and adds an inch…and Helen’s laptop is in the menders!! ‘Just make it the same as mine’ says Helen! I wasn’t that enamoured with the plan, but I duly measured Helen’s sleeve and added a seam allowance. What concerned me was how much width is lost purely through the bulk of the fabric…

The phrase ‘just like Helen’s’ also included the stripes and bands of different fabrics, which I’d only done in the first place because none of the remnants were big enough! Rachel likes purple (she’s got good taste like her god-mother!) I found three purple batik fabrics and a plain dark purple in my stash which met with Helen’s approval.

Laptop sleeve I cut 5 1/2″ strips from the batiks and 1 1/2″ strips from the purple. Having made up the front and back pieces I sandwiched it with some batting and some spare cotton at the back. I had a blue/green variegated quilting thread left over from another project so I used that to stitch a meandering stipple pattern all over the front and back. It was a chance to try out my new quilting gloves I bought at the Knitting and Stitching Show last weekend, it does make it easier!

I remembered that last time I added an extra layer of battinng to really protect the laptop, so I just used spray adhesive to baste the extra layer.

Laptop sleeveOnce the quilting was complete it was just a matter of following the instructions. The pattern is from Sew Mama Sew, it’s designed by Elizabeth of ‘Oh Fransson’ and it’s very straight forward, she tells you how to measure your computer to get it to fit snugly. The pattern has a Velcro fastening but as Helens had a button and loop fastening I thought I’d better do the same. I found some blue/purple shot taffeta type fabric which matched nicely for the lining. It was another project where quilting clips came in very useful, as couldn’t have got a pin through all the layers! I used a walking foot for the construction and my sewing machine coped really well with the layers.

All I’ve got to do now is stitch a button on, however we hit a potential problem…it’s half an inch smaller than Helen’s!!! This is what concerned me about not having the laptop to measure! I’ve tried my OH’s laptop in it and it fit’s snugly, I seem to recall Helen’s was quite a loose fit. Anyway Helen is taking it for a sneaky try on, so I’m hoping it fit’s nicely, otherwise it will be a WOMBAT, a Waste Of Money, Batting And Time!!!

Fingers crossed it will be ok, as I really like it, it’s come together nicely.

First Sunday in Advent

Advent RingToday is the first Sunday in Advent which in our household heralds the beginning of the Christmas season. We’ve always ‘done’ Advent in a big way, although more so when the children were little. We had a pile of Christmas books, an Advent ring, an Advent candle and a nativity set. Each Sunday evening we would light candles depending on how many Sundays to Christmas, read a story, add figures to the nativity set and sing some carols round the piano.

We did have one Christmas when Helen was about three or four which has gone down in family history! I  was telling the nativity story to them using a picture book, I asked what the baby was called, “Jesus” answered James, to which Helen retorted “But I want to call it Rachel!” and she insisted on calling him Rachel for the rest of Christmas!
