Scuba Skirt

In January I did the Karen Brown Declutter Challenge and as part of it I reorganised my fabric stash, I pulled everything out of the zip-lock bags, put like fabrics together, updated my Stash Hub app and had the scary realisation that I had 275m of fabric! I need to do more dress-making!

In my stash was this length of scuba. I bought it on one of the Facebook de-stash sites, 3m for £10, a bargain! When it arrived though I did think what on earth am I going to make with it, I really wasn’t sure about it. Unfortunately being scuba it was quite bulky and took up a fair bit of room in my cupboard. I decided I needed to either sew it or find a new home for it.

Having played around with the length I decided it could work as a straight skirt. I found a pattern (Simplicity 7799) in my stash (another bargain from facebook!) which was a pull on straight skirt with a back vent. When I looked at the pattern it was basically just two rectangles and the vent so it just had a centre front and back seam. I decided it didn’t need a centre front seam as my fabric was wide enough and I didn’t want a break in the pattern, so I just cut one large rectangle..

It was listed as a 2 hour skirt, and I probably could sew it in 2 hours…if I didn’t faff around!

Anyway, it was a very easy sew, just the vent to stitch and then a channel to make for the elasticated waist.

I’m really pleased with it now it’s made, I think it will be quite a useful every day sort of skirt. I did try making a smock type top from the remaining piece but it just looked huge and too much, even with a plain skirt, so I’m afraid that got binned…but I like the skirt.

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

Congratulations on making it through the DeCluttering challenge. This year was my third time, and I didn’t finish – stalled out on the fabric culling at the end. Your skirt is very nice, looking forward to seeing what other pretty fabrics you found in your stash.

What a great idea to sew the bulkiest fabric in your stash first! The skirt looks great!
