Postcards form the Hedge SAL

I’m still making pretty slow progress on these postcards but I have managed to finish another one before going on holiday. Three weeks ago I had made good progress with my dragonfly embroidery, the background and the body was stitched and I had started the wings, these are stitched with elements of stumpwork techniques……

Dragonflies have two sets of wings so I stitched the second lower pair onto the organza. I then had the scary task of trimming them very closely. I love the shimmery effect of the organza, it’s worked really well for dragon-fly wings.

I then had to make a hole where I wanted the wings to be inserted. In an ideal world they would have gone on the back of the dragonfly but there was no way I could get a pair of wires through the body. Instead I attached both pairs to the side of the body. I used an awl to make a big enough hole. This is one at the other end of a stitch-ripper which I bought at the Harrogate flower show as it’s from hand-turned wood, it’s a lovely tool to use.

Once I persuaded each pair of wires through the hole I over-stitched them on the back to secure them, For the eyes I used two beads from by stash and then my dragon-fly was finished.

These lovely designs are from Featherstitch House, they’re released weekly usually. As I want to make them into a book I don’t want too many, so I’m thinking of making maybe a dozen and then calling it a day…I’ll see how I feel!

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!
