Just a little bit further…

I’m just a little bit further down the Rabbit Hole. I’ve not done a lot but I thought I can’t have three HQAL’s on the trot with nothing to show!

Last time I showed you my DTRH quilt I’d just started quilting the houses…

Well I’m still quilting the houses but I’m about three quarters round. My quilting here isn’t the neatest as I’m finding all the layers involved with foundation paper piecing a bit tricky to get through. I’m stitching a quarter inch out from the roofs and also a zig-zag sort of line through the row of houses, going up and down round some of the windows. It doesn’t look much but even this border is nearly a metre square. I’m thinking of stitching rays of sunshine from the sunflower and then this border will be finished.

At the moment I’m concentrating on my Tall Year Square Etui when I have hand-stitching time, once it is finished I will concentrate on my quilt and hopefully make quicker progress!

Hand Quilt Along Links

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

the job of hand-quilting is a labour of love, but it’s going to be gorgeous when finished.

  2. I love your quilt and followed your progress since the beginning. Can I ask, do you mark your quilt top before you start quilting? I have nearly finished hand quilting a large appliqued quilt which I did mark (and found it a real pain!) and have another waiting. I was taught to mark first but it seems that a lot of people that I follow don’t , and their quilting is beautiful, as yours is.

Thanks Carole, I’m pretty new to hand quilting, I’ve not marked this one so far, though I have used quarter inch masking tape in places. I’ve mainly quilted round stuff so far so I haven’t felt the need for it. If I do a quilting pattern that doesn’t follow the design I think I will mark it.

Your quilt is beautiful! It is hard to quilt through multiple layers when a blocks is foundation paper pieced but it is so worth the effort. There is a quiet dignity to hand quilted projects which machine quilting just doesn’t match.

This is a lot of hand quilting. I think you are doing a good job. Getting anything accomplished through out the holidays is a minor miracle to me. Carry on…

I am finding that finishing a step/section gives me much motivation to move on. If you can just get through the houses, I bet you enjoy some fast paced stitch for a time! It also helps when another major project is completed! You have so many beautiful creations in process right now, it’s hard to decide what to work on, I bet. 😄
