I’ve finished another quilt! This isn’t quite a happy dance time though, more of a warning to those of you who have quilt tops just not quite finished…a UFO
This quilt was made by my mum, years ago, probably over ten years ago, we found it whilst we were clearing her house. She doesn’t remember making it, but I think it’s probably one of her best (she made a lot of quilts!) I love the colours and the idea of just having one large piece of special fabric in the centre, it’s simple but very effective. I think it’s beautiful.
My mum pieced it, she clearly sent it off to Christine Marriage for quilting (our local long arm quilter) as it’s beautifully quilted. My mum machine stitched the binding on, all she had to do was hand stitch it down on the back…
…but it sat there probably for over a decade, all for the sake of a couple of evenings hand-stitching, never finished and therefore never used.
My sister would like the quilt for her spare room, so I said I would finish it for her as she doesn’t do much sewing these days and has never got into quilting.
The binding is heavier cotton than usual quilting weight, so it was a bit bulky to stitch down. It’s quite a big quilt too at about 90″ by 72″ but after a couple of evenings it was done. I quite like stitching binding down, though judging by comments on facebook pages, I think I’m in the minority! It’s one of those tedious tasks you can do whilst your mind wanders all over the place 🙂
So if anyone reading this has quilts like this, UFO’s for the sake of a couple of evenings, just stop procrastinating, get on with it and finish them! Then at least you can have the pleasure of using it or giving it to someone else to cherish.
My sister is coming to collect it soon, she can launder it to freshen it up and then pop it on the spare room bed for visitors to admire and enjoy. I think it’s lovely that it is finally finished and going to it’s new home.

I like hand stitching the binding too. Once you get into a rhythm it is relaxing. I sometimes make that last little effort to finish a project and it goes quicker than expected and wonder why I didn’t do it before! Lovely quilt too.

I have another acronym for you: THB, which stands for Too Hard Basket. There are a couple of projects in my THB: one quilt where multiple bias edges have stretched and the partially finished pieces are now so banana shaped I haven’t a clue what to do with them (well actually, I do, but it involves Too-Hardness), and another where some of the EPP templates and fabrics are so small that they *almost* qualify for WWIT. That one will get done. Eventually….

I don’t mind hand-sewing the binding as it always means project is so close to a finish. My procrastination comes with the quilting as I’m always afraid I’m going to ruin my “top”.
That is a gorgeous floral print your Mum chose, and your sister will be well-pleased to be able to have the patchwork on display!

I hate making binding, and dislike putting on and taking off the walking foot to sew on binding…but I like handsewing the binding to the quilt….love turning every corner with a perfectly mitered seam (fingers crossed every time) and the joy of putting down my needle and saying “it’s done, it’s beautiful and I made it”.

I like to hand-stitch the binding down. It´s pretty relaxing and when it´s done the whole quilt is done! 🙂 Your mother´s quilt is so lovely!

When I was young I hated hand sewing, and now I find it relaxing….must be a wisdom thing!😂 we are all getting wiser these days, it certainly can’t be age!

Oops! I love the design of this quilt, so elegant and the large print is set off perfectly with the pieced borders. I’m glad It will be out and used. The acronyms are great…PIG, WOMBAT…

Yay!! It’s done and it’s lovely! I love sewing binding–I love the look of “finish.” If I make it to the binding stage, I always finish the quilt!

You are not alone, hand stitching binding on the back of a quilt is one of my favorite things to do, particularly in the evenings or during football games. That is a lovely quilt, I think I had some of that fabric at one time.

A lovely quilt. Pity your mum doesn’t recognize her work but I’m certain will love to see it finished. No doubt your sister will be thrilled to own it. The Quilter’s code board is spot on.

I am in the binding minority with you. What a beautiful quilt. Yes it is simple, but the fabrics are beautiful together. It is wonderful that you have finished the quilt and it will be loved and used by your sister.
