I’m doing two stitch-a-longs at the moment, the Lizzie Stitching Wallet by Faby Reilly and my stumpwork and silk ribbon flower lattice. I’m posting about both today so if you are looking for the flower lattice SAL, just scroll down, it’s the post before this one!
The Lizzie Stitching Wallet is a very pretty design with hydrangeas and lisianthus, with slots for scissors and needles etc, perfect for me to take to Embroiderers Guild meetings. Faby Reilly, the designer, is releasing a new section of the pattern every one to two weeks, I’ve just finished section 8 in time for the new section to be revealed tomorrow.
We’ve been working on the inside of the wallet, the middle section to be precise, where the embroidery scissors will sit. There’s two very elegant lisianthus buds either side in cross-stitch and back-stitch. For some reason I had no end of trouble with the long stems, undoing one side several times! The stitches vary in length, for example 1 thread across, 3 down, or 1 across and 4 down, this is how Faby gets the lovely curves in her designs. Unfortunately last night I kept mis-counting a thread somewhere, I think I concentrated more with the second one and got it right first time!!
The triangle in the centre to keep the scissor point safe is felt, I didn’t want the standard holly green or bright green that most shops supply so I went over to Skipton as I knew Craft & Create have some beautiful wool felt in gorgeous shades. I found a soft green that blends in beautifully with the threads. It wasn’t easy stitching it on neatly as I had to use a sharp needle to get through the felt but it was impossible to follow the threads to get an even line.
I looked for some pretty pink scissors this week in Samuel Taylors, these blue ones are very inexpensive but pretty and sharp! Typically Sam Taylors didn’t have any in so I’ll keep my eye open for some to match my sewing wallet. I’m looking forward to the next pattern release tomorrow, find out what I’ll be stitching next.

That little scissor pocket is a very elegant solution, and you’re right about those scissors being sharp – the pair you sent with Little Lizzie have become my default pair, my really tiny gold ones becoming part of my minute travel embroidery kit. I must remember your point about different stitch length for creating smooth curves…

I love my little flowery scissors, they only cost about £2.50 so I’ll happily take them out knowing it’s not the end of the world if I lose them!!

That soft green wool felt is just the ticket. I do love the different lengths on those stem stitches, a very unique way to add interest and curved lines.
