My Lizzie Stitching Wallet is looking very pretty. This is a stitch-a-long by Faby Reilly, so every one or two weeks we get the next section of the pattern as the design is gradually revealed to us. Last week we stitched the ‘spines’ of the wallet, embellished with sequins and beads, it looked like this…
…I was going to leave all the beads until last as I was stitching on a hoop, but I couldn’t resist! I bought an inexpensive table top frame to try. My stitching wallet is now stretched on the frame. I’ve used it for stitching this section and at the moment I have mixed feelings, I’m sewing on a desk, sitting on a dining room chair and I find even on it’s lowest setting it’s a bit high, I also find the light tricky as I have a window in front of me and I find it’s actually quite distracting to be able to see light through the linen, I find it’s actually harder to count! At the moment I’m stitching with the frame resting on my knees, leaning against the desk, which I’m sure is not the idea!! It has made me consider looking at frames at the next stitching show when I could try some styles out and find what suits me.
This week I’ve been stitching section 4 which will be the back of the trifold wallet. The area in the middle is where a fastener will be attached. We’ve two weeks allocated to stitch this section so I can catch up on other projects as well now!

The stitching is exquisite!
I thought that style of frame was supposed be used on the floor, with the angled frame much higher, just above waist level, and that bottom rail for your feet. Just goes to show what I know…! But would it actually work that way? And would it be comfortable?

Thanks Kate, you can get floor ones too, I thought this table top one wouldn’t take up quite so much room, even on it’s highest setting it would be too low to put on the floor. I think I need to try some out, it only cost me £10, so it was worth a punt 🙂

I picked up a vintage stitching frame like your one somewhere but the only way I’m going to use it for embroidery is if I can fit it under the sewing machine 😉 🙂

I am enjoying watching this pretty embroidery grow. The beads on the spine are a lovely touch. Do you have any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of stand alone frames versus embroidery hoops? I am wondering if I should use something.

I’ve used hoops for years for cross-stitch, my favourite is one I sit on so I can use both hands. I’ve only used frames before when doing needlepoint to help it keep it’s shape. The disadvantage with hoops is that you either need one big enough to take the whole embroidery (which is pretty wasteful of linen and a bit cumbersome) or you have to move the hoop over the embroidery, which is ok for cross-stitch (I take it out after each session) but you can’t squash any embellishment or textured stitch. My flower lattice really needs to be on a frame too, I just find a basic frame awkward to use.

I think so too, at least trying this one has made me think it’s not something to buy over the internet, I need to try different styles and see what suits me.

Thanks Gail, it’s going to be a stitching wallet, so it has needle case, scissor holder etc inside, so it will definitely be used when I go to Embroiderers Guild 🙂

I have a frame that sits over my lap. I sit on a couch with a window behind me and it is really easy to use. I like having the light from the window behind me, because it makes it easy to see my work.
