Laptop Cover

A few weeks ago I was trying to decide what to buy my daughter’s boyfriend for Christmas when she happened to mention he would really like a laptop cover like the one I made her last year. I’m always quite touched when someone asks for a homemade present, especially when it’s a young person, which brings me to my next dilemma…

Game of ThronesWhat kind of fabric do you  use for a trendy 2o year old lad!!! I thought about going along a sports theme as he is studying sports science, then I had a brainwave! He loves Game of Thrones, so I started to google for GoT fabric. I finally found some on ebay and ordered 1/2 a metre. As fabric goes though it’s a bit odd, it’s a polycotton (I would have preferred 100% cotton) but it’s almost as if someone has printed it at home, you can just make out a fine line on the front where a thread has obviously been in the way of the printer. Having said that, it looks great for a laptop cover.

I used the same tutorial as I did for Helen’s which is on Sew Mama Sew, the instructions are based on your own laptop measurements, so it’s easy getting it to fit. I padded it with a layer of batting and then quilted along the main lines of the fabric design. I added a second layer of batting, just to add a bit more protection before stitching in the lining. I lined it with a couple of fat quarters I had in rich orange colours, they nicely pick out the fire in the outer cover.

Game of Thrones FabricThe pattern uses a strip of velcro to fasten, as usual I couldn’t find mine, I remember finding it when I moved into my sewing room, but I’ve not seen it since!! I used a thick hair elastic to make a button loop instead. I made it for quite a big button, then when I was rummaging around in my button box for a suitable button I spotted this toggle. It’s chunky enough to be held by the elastic and somehow I felt it fitted in with the Game of Thrones theme (bearing in mind I have never seen a single episode of GoT!!!)

So that’s another present ticked off my list, just two more to finish.

I had a bit of excitement yesterday when my Stitching Santa present arrived in the post. This is a secret Santa for sewing bloggers organised by Sewchet, my parcel has pride of place under our Christmas tree, I can’t wait til Christmas when I can open it 🙂

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

I think the GoT cover will go down a storm, it looks cool with the toggle. And your pressie has arrived! How exciting!! I think mine came yesterday as there was a card from the postie but I’ll have to collect it tomorrow. 😁
