Sewing Room DIY

DSC_0015 (2)I ‘m still busy organising my new sewing room and making it my own space. Years ago (probably about 20!!) I bought a wooden storage unit at Ikea, i used it for general craft stuff for years but since my reorganisation it is my haberdash drawers. I’ve got a drawer for bindings and trimmings, one each for elastic, ribbon, zips and lace, in fact lace has got two drawers!!

I’ve painted them white to match my pegboard and some units. Eventually I’d like to give them a proper paint with undercoat etc, but at the moment a basic coat of gloss is sufficient.

Sewing Room StorageThe drawers had little wooden knobs on, pretty boring, I was a bit staggered by the price of new drawer knobs, I did buy a set from TKMaxx but I was a bit disappointed when I got home to find the screw was about 2″ too long. Today whilst market shopping in Otley I spied some old cotton reels in a charity shop window, 39p each. I had a bit of a light-bulb moment! There were four for sale, I knew I had at least one more at home so I bought them. I went straight over to the hardware shop and bought six long nut and bolts, I went for a fairly thin bolt as I didn’t want to have to make the hole bigger in the drawer. I knew I had some washers at home if needed.

Ten minutes after getting home I had six new drawer knobs! Three of them are vintage wooden reels, three are plastic, so I’ll keep my eye open for some more wooden ones. I simply put a washer at the end and attached with the nut and bolt. I love it!

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

  6. Great idea and good to actually put the vintage cotton reels to use rather than just storing them away in a drawer.
