Snug as a Bug and a Focal Point

Focal Point. The Splendid SamplerWell I’m managing to keep up with the twice weekly blocks for The Splendid Sampler quilt, it does help seeing everyone else’s blocks on facebook, enthusiasm is definitely infectious!

Block 6 was released last Thursday, so I managed to make it over the weekend, it’s called Focal Point and was designed by Natalie Bonner. I’m fairly pleased with this one, though my points aren’t as perfect as I would like, I wish I’d remembered the tip to leave the rectangle untrimmed when making flying geese, I must remember that one next time! I’m trying to keep to nice soft colours, which isn’t my usual palette, I do keep wondering about adding a bit more contrast, especially with a block like this one.

7-Splendid-Sampler-Amy-Sinibaldi-Block-multiBlock 7 came out on Sunday and I loved it immediately, isn’t it cute!! It’s designed by Amy Sinibaldi, I think it’s my favourite block so far! There were lots of ideas coming up on facebook whilst I pondered how to do it, I loved the ones where quilters had made mini quilts, but I decided to go with just embroidery, I know my limits!! The original design is just in backstitch, but one block I particularly liked on fb had used blanket stitch round the quilt and I rather liked that touch.

I looked in my floss box and found a variegated thread, it looks nothing on the spool, pretty drab in fact, it’s soft blues, greens and apricot, it worked perfectly with this as it picks up all the colours from the fabrics. I used a subtly coloured background which has very pale splodges of pink and yellow, I managed to arrange it so he has little pink cheeks.

I traced the design and then back-stitched it last night. I decided to add the flowers, hearts and butterflies to link it in with the other blocks. I love it, I’m really pleased with how it came out.

About craftycreeky

I live in a busy market town in Yorkshire with my husband, kids, dogs and chickens. I love trying new crafts, rediscovering old ones, gardening, walking...anything creative really I started this blog after my New Year resolution worked so well. My resolution (the first one I've ever kept!) was to post a photograph of my garden on Facebook every day. My hope was that I would then see what was good in the garden and not just weeds and work, which was my tendency. The unexpected side-effect was that I have enjoyed many more hours in the garden. I am hoping that 'The Crafty Creek' will have the same effect. Happy creating!

I am also doing the Splended Sampler challenge! I love your colors. Very calming. And Block 7 is adorable. I may have to copy you on that and just do the embroidery.

  6. Your blocks all look very pretty. I am going to embroider Block 7, and I think blanket stitch looks the most suitable stitch! Your variegated cotton is very pretty, I may copy that!
I’m only on my 3rd block! Well done You for keeping up!
